Western
Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Consortium
(WESVAARRDEC)-WVSU Base Agency, the country's oldest research and development consortium in the
fields of agriculture, aquaculture and natural resources (AANR) sector will conduct WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 with
the theme Advancing Science and Technology
towards Inclusive Growth (ASTIG) in Region 6. FIESTA stands for Farmers and Industry Encounters through Science and Technology Agenda, a national science and technology promotional fair conducted by DOST-PCAARRD and adopted at the regional level. The 5-day event will take place in Cabatuan, Iloilo from August 21-25, 2017, a week before the Tinuom Festival, a ten-day celebration of the town's history and famous hometown culinary dish. Tinuom is a heartwarming soup made of tasty native chicken wrapped in banana leaves and simmered in fresh herbs and spices. Cabatuan, Iloilo was chosen to be the venue of WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 due to the presence of native chicken producers in the area and it is also one of the biggest producers of mangoes in Panay island. Another factor is its being adjacent to the Municipality of Maasin, a town famous for bamboo and muscovado production.
WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 will highlight the region's four consortium- led research commodities- Darag native chicken, muscovado sugar, bamboo and mango. The event will feature activities such as bazaar and exhibits, techno fora on commodities, media forum, public lectures, quizzes and contests, and product sampling among others.
The public is invited to attend these events. For more information, please contact the WESVAARRDEC Secretariat at (033) 320-0870 loc. 1138 or wesvarrdec@wvsu.edu.ph.
