A Seminar Workshop on Photo Editing for IEC Development will be conducted on September 28-29, 2017 at Smallville 21 Hotel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The workshop is a follow-up to the Orientation Workshop on Extension Digital Reporting held last August 18, 2017 where the participants requested for a separate training on photo editing and multi-media arts. Expected to attend the workshop are the WVSU extension coordinators and project leaders.
The College of Communication (COC) of West Visayas State University in cooperation with the University Extension and Development Center conducted a training workshop on "Participatory Planning for Extension Project: Highlighting Communication for Development" last September 15, 2017 at Smallville 21 Hotel in Iloilo City.
The training workshop was borne out of the need to acquaint new and old extension implementers with the project development cycle, particularly of the role of development communication (DevCom) and community participation in crafting more meaningful and beneficial community extension projects.
Prof. Ricky Becodo of the COC served as resource person while fellow faculty members Ms. Rona Alingasa and Ms. Riza Charity Coronica served as activity coordinator and evaluator respectively. Prof. Becodo discussed topics such as phases for project development; participatory rural communication appraisal (PRCA); situation analysis research dimensions and situation analysis research dimensions.
Western Visayas Agriculture Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Resources Consortium (WESVARRDEC) conducted a successful 2017 WESVAARRDEC FIESTA last August 21-25, 2017 at Cabatuan, Iloilo. The FIESTA is an event-based promotional modality that aims to convey the message of abundance and prosperity in the agricultural industry through science and technoloy (S&T). As a community affair, FIESTA engages various stakeholders to create linkages, partnerships and opportunities.
The opening day was graced by officials of the local government of Cabatuan and guests from DOST- PCCAARRD. Activities such as cooking contests, exhibits-cum-bazaars, media forum, techno fora and sharing of good agricultural practices were conducted. A field guided tour at a Maasin bamboo products factory was also conducted for the participants to give them a first hand look at the town's bamboo clearing and weaving technologies.
West Visayas State University currently serves as WESVAARRDEC's base agency. Through the activities of the consortium, the university seeks a wider market for the transfer of its Darag Native Chicken technology.

A series of Development Communication (DevCom) trainings for extension project implementation will kick off on September 15, 2016 at Smallville 21 Hotel in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The training is borne out of the need to embed communication and community participation as inputs in the project development cycle. As a first in the series, this training will highlight communication for development and the role it plays in participatory planning.
Expected to join the training are extension coordinators, project and program leaders from various West Visayas State University colleges and campuses. They will be trained on how to use DevCom as an extension approach as well as PRCA techniques and tools to effectively involve and engage project stakeholders.
To mark ASEAN's 50th birthday, a Multi-Sectoral Forum and Exhibit of Traditional ASEAN Costumes were held at West Visayas State University Cultural Center last August 8, 2017. The events were spearheaded by the Regional Association of National Government Executives (RANGE) in cooperation with Philippine Information Agency (PIA) and West Visayas State University (WVSU). ASEAN 50-Philippines 2017 with the theme "Partnering for Change, Engaging the World" celebrates 50 years of solidarity and cooperation of the ten member countries namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei Darrusalam, Vietnam, Lao PRD, Myanmar and Cambodia.
Guests from national government agencies, NGOs, media and the academe attended the forum which aimed to spread awareness regarding ASEAN's collective agenda of peace, progress and solidarity. During the forum, the Philippine Information Agency presented an overview of the ASEAN organization as well as the rationale of the ASEAN Information Campaign. Meanwhile, the Commission of Higher Education presented "Insights on the Intervention Involving Education and Research Institutions though ASEAN Education Programme" while the Department of Trade and Industry presented "The Philippines MSMEs in the ASEAN Community."

Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Consortium
(WESVAARRDEC)-WVSU Base Agency, the country's oldest research and development consortium in the
fields of agriculture, aquaculture and natural resources (AANR) sector will conduct WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 with
the theme Advancing Science and Technology
towards Inclusive Growth (ASTIG) in Region 6. FIESTA stands for Farmers and Industry Encounters through Science and Technology Agenda, a national science and technology promotional fair conducted by DOST-PCAARRD and adopted at the regional level. The 5-day event will take place in Cabatuan, Iloilo from August 21-25, 2017, a week before the Tinuom Festival, a ten-day celebration of the town's history and famous hometown culinary dish. Tinuom is a heartwarming soup made of tasty native chicken wrapped in banana leaves and simmered in fresh herbs and spices. Cabatuan, Iloilo was chosen to be the venue of WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 due to the presence of native chicken producers in the area and it is also one of the biggest producers of mangoes in Panay island. Another factor is its being adjacent to the Municipality of Maasin, a town famous for bamboo and muscovado production.
WESVAARRDEC FIESTA 2017 will highlight the region's four consortium- led research commodities- Darag native chicken, muscovado sugar, bamboo and mango. The event will feature activities such as bazaar and exhibits, techno fora on commodities, media forum, public lectures, quizzes and contests, and product sampling among others.

The University Extension and Development Center conducted its 20th Extension In-House Review last July 20-21, 2017 at the Function Hall of Research and Extension Bldg at the West Visayas State University. Extension coordinators and project leaders of the university's colleges, campuses and units gathered once again to present their extension progress reports and new extension proposals for approval and implementation in 2018.
Dr. Ricky Becodo of the College of Communication, Dr. Greta Gabinete of University Research and Development Center and Dr. Wilhelm Cerbo of University Planning and Development served as evaluators during the the two-day activity.
Practical Landscaping III students from West Visayas State University's Lifelong Learning for Self-Sufficiency Program (LLSSP/Non-Formal Courses) showcased their creative output from lessons and techniques learned in growing and building stylish and beautiful indoor dish gardens. Their output can viewed via a dish garden exhibit held at the lobby of the University Extension and Development Center office. In particular, the students displayed their skills in succulent/cacti dish gardening which is a very popular and trendy way of enhancing interior design spaces. Given its popularity, dish gardening makes a satisfying and profitable hobby or business. Practical Landscaping III classes are facilitated by Dr. Cris Lopez and are held every Saturday afternoon from 12:30 pm-5:30 p.m.
