In partnership with the Local Government of Zarraga, the College of Communications, College of Agriculture, the University Research and Development Center, and the University Extension and Development Center conducted a Training on Darag Native Chicken Production last September 25, 2020 at Barangay Talaugis, Zarraga, Iloilo. Ms. Geraldine Navigar, Municipal Agricultural Officer of Zarraga, convened 27 residents from the selected barangay.
Mayor John Tarrosa came to encourage the townsfolk to strive to learn the technology in producing Darag Native Chicken and how to keep the birds from getting sick. He also said that "Ang kapital indi lamang kwarta, imo na tiempo, imo pabalhas’ and that ‘bisan gamay imo kwarta, pero dugangan mo sang kapisan, ka-ukot, matigayon naton ini."
The resource persons were Dr. Helen Genandoy and Mr. Ray Arenga. They introduced the parent fowl of the Darag, explained thoroughly the timeline for production, the characteristics of the hen and rooster, the common ailments and how to treat them. Care and management stressed cleanliness, keeping the water supply fresh every day, minimizing presence of mosquitoes, and proper feeding.
Before the end of the activity, Dr. Becodo explained the commitment of the Local Government of Zarraga and WVSU and Mrs. Aurelia Bangeles, the Livestock Technician of Zarraga read the Statement of Agreement to be signed by each attendee when they receive their starter kit of four (4) Darag hens and one (1) Darag rooster. Each recipient of the family unit has the responsibility to return five (5) Darag native chickens that will be distributed to another set of farmers.
The participants then were asked to prepare an area for raising the Darag Native Chicken that will be delivered in the 3rd week of October 2020.
