LAMBUNAO, Iloilo – The aim of reaching out to the indigenous people through education motivated the Office of Training and Extension to facilitate the conduct of Culturally Integrated Based Education to the teachers of the Department of Education.

“Before we have no knowledge on how to deliver the instructions to our learners with regards to the Indigenous Knowledge System and Practices. We have difficulties in teaching our students, what things to teach and where to start,” said Leah Mae Gallego, one of teachers in the District of Lambunao West.

The West Visayas State University-Lambunao Campus in partnership with the Department of Education, Division of Iloilo conducted the Culturally Integrated Based Education and Teachers Retooling on IPED Implementation at WVSU-Lambunao Library.

The training was conducted in October 4-6, 2019 and was participated by 126 teachers teaching indigenous peoples education in the Third Congressional District under the Schools Division of Iloilo.

According to Mrs. Concepcion T. Tababa, the Division IPED Focal Person,  she was so thankful for  West Visayas State University-Lambunao Campus for partnering with her and the Schools Division of Iloilo. The work for IP education becomes easy for them to implement and to reach out to the teacher because of the training.

The training aimed to assess the teachers’ understanding of the the indigenous knowledge system and practices as implementers of indigenous peoples’ education, provide awareness on indigenous rights and educational thrusts of the government, and improve teachers’ capabilities in documentation of IKSP and translate it into educational learning materials useful in the delivery of instruction.

The activity employed workshops, lectures, sharing, presentation and even ethnographic participatory research on IKSP that teachers could utilize in the classroom while teaching indigenous learners. Their output from the training is very essential to the mandate of Department of Education in the promotion of indigenous teaching in  basic education.

Leumes Veil Legada said, “Learning from this training widened our views on the situation of indigenous peoples in the country and specifically in the Municipality of Lambunao. Now that I have learned about the IpEd learning, I could now employ strategies on how to deal with my indigenous students.”

The CIBE training was funded by the Indigenous Peoples Education Office in the amount of one hundred fifty thousand pesos for  food, materials and certificates of the teachers and speakers. The said office monitored and facilitated the implementation of the training.

The different topics were presented by Dr. Mary Josephine C. Bautista, Head, Research, Training and Extension Office, Mr. Clyde Larroder, Campus Extension Coordinator who is also an expert in Social Science and Dr. Jaime Latoza the program leader of the campus extension.

Another training for teachers on CIBE was conducted at Racsos Woodland Resort in Guimbal, Iloilo through the Schools Division of Iloilo. This was participated by the teachers in the First Congressional District in the Province of Iloilo.

“Out from that training,  I learned to gather information from the ground level or from the community that helps me to handle my indigenous learners. Today I conduct gathering of information and compile it to  serve as my source of information and instructional materials. All of these I learned from the training conducted by West Visyas State University-Lambunao Campus,” Geraldin Pilla said.
