Training on Darag Chicken Production and Orientation on Cooperativism held in Sara, Iloilo

by Dr. Ricky P. Becodo

Another training on Darag Production was successfully conducted from March 16 to 17, 2022 at the rooftop of the Bureau of Fire Protection Building in Sara, Iloilo.
The said activity is one in the series of trainings on Darag Chicken Production since December 2020 under the WVSU HELPs Sara Program. Participants of the previous trainings received Darag Chicken starter kits composed of at least one ready -to- breed Darag rooster and four ready -to- lay hens.
Based on the Municipal Government Livelihood Assistance Division of Sara, those who had received the starter kits years ago have already multiplied the number of their Darag Chickens, and had also started to earn profits through the project.
Dr. Helen Genandoy, faculty researcher of WVSU College of Agriculture and Forestry, and Mr Rosendo Parrenas of Panay Darag Breeders Association (PADABA) lectured on Darag Chicken Production, and project monitoring. They also tackled issues on Darag Chicken diseases and mortality.
On the other hand, Dr. Corazon Samorin, Dean of WVSU College of Business and Management, and her faculty shared to the participants the concept and nature of cooperativism for the possiblity of organizing the Darag raisers in Sara and for a more sustainable project.
Hon. Jon Aying, Mayor of Sara, dropped by during the second day activity. He encouraged the participants to continue to engage in Darag Chicken Production. Mayor Aying also pointed out the potentials in raising Darag that will eventually improve the raisers' income.
The two-day activity was realized through the effort of the WVSU UEDC staff, Faculty extensionists from WVSU-CAF and CBM, and staff of the Municipal Government Livelihood Assistance Division (MGLAD) spearheaded by Mr Argeo Porquez, Jr.
Funds for this program were taken from WVSU, LGU of Sara, DA, and DOLE.
WVSU, through its University Extension and Development Center, functions and committed to help the communities help themselves for development.
