Towards a sustainable community livelihood for the barangays of Bingawan: The making of citronella oil and graham balls


 
Furthering the reach and impact of the Rays of Hope Program is the opportunity for sustainable community livelihood. The College of Nursing Extension UNit conducted a training on the making of Citronella OIl and Graham Balls to fifty residents from Brgy. Alabidhan and Quinangyana, Bingawan last DEcember 12, 2022. This is timely as teh municiplaity beset by the pandemic is in need of opportunities such as livelihood trainings to consider and contribute to its economic development. 

Activity Coordinator Dr. Liza Marie Ramirez spearheaded the event together with ten faculty extensionists. The Acting Dean of the College of Nursing, Dr. Madonna S. Palmes is also in attendance in full support of the endeavor. Brgy. Capt. Pamocol welcomes everyone and expressed his gratitude for this valuable partnership. Dr. Ramrez provided an orientation to the training after which participants moved and grooved to a community danceled by Dr. Dodge Churchill Toledo. Citronella Oil Making discussed by Prof. Virginia F. Federiso showed the residents the processes and steps on how the oil is extracted and prepared as a natural insect repellant and a medical agent with various uses such as promoting wound healing, fighting fatigue and lifting the mood. 

Just in time for the holiday season Mrs. Lily Ledesma shared her expertise in making special dessert, Graham Balls. Apart from teaching the participants how this made, computations for reselling were discussed. Overwhelming responses to the activity were shared by the residents, satisfaction also apparent hearing their verbal accounts as well as written. The activity ended with residents and faculty extensionists in all smiles and in jolly spirits, just like Prof. Maylin P. Habana who served as emcee/facilitator.
