UEDC conducts assessment on Darag chicken health management practices in Sara, Iloilo

Farmer-recipients in the Municipality of Sara, Iloilo were assessed by the University Extension and Development Center- West Visayas State University regarding health management practices for Darag Native Chicken multiplier farm project. The activity, spearheaded by Dr. Ricky Becodo aimed to study the disease management practices of farmers in Barangays Malapaya and Ardemil. The study also aimed to determine if there are existing ordinances passed by the barangays that cover disease management. The findings of the assessment activity will serve as input for a proposed disease management training slated sometime in April 2023.

The team of Dr. Becodo is  appreciative of Mayor Jon Aying’s initiative in prioritizing the Darag Native Chicken Farm  Multiplier Project.  Mr. Argeo Porquez Jr., head of the Municipal Government and Livelihood Assistance Division (MGLAD) has consistently monitored and collected data for WVSU’s decision-making  function and effective implementation of the said project. The team is also looking forward to holding a seminar on Darag product pricing.

The assessment activity is critical since uncontrolled diseases can increase the  mortality rate of  Darag native chickens. It is important that timely intervention is given to ensure sustainable Drag native chicken production.

Likewise, farmers who see the opportunity in Darag chicken  raising will discover that the enterprise is sustainable and does not stop at 40 multiplier farms. Interested persons can reach out to Sara MGLAD to express their interest so the municipality can screen and consider them in the next training opportunity.
