UEDC monitors and consults with 40 farmer cooperators

The Municipality of Sara has been a beneficiary of Darag Native Chicken Production and Marketing Project since 2022. To sustain this endeavor, Ricky P. Becodo, Director of the University Extension and Development Center, and the Municipal Government Livelihood Assistance Division (MGLAD) met with 40 farmer cooperators on July 27, 2023 for consultation and monitoring. SB Dennis E. Caraecle, Agriculture and Cooperatives Committee Chairman, Hon. Ryan S. Zerrudo, Vice Mayor, and Hon. Municipal Mayor Jon N. Aying welcomed everyone and conveyed their enthusiasm for the event.

Several concerns were expressed throughout the consultation. One of these is Darag native chicken's rising mortality rate. Since the onset of the rainy season, the number of dead hens has increased, alarming the farmers concerned. Second, the farmers were unable to access a market to promote and sell their product. Future plans were established to address these issues such as setting up a cooperative and subsequently holding a Darag festival with the goal of making Sara the Darag Capital.
